Unveiling the Impact of Pilates Stance: A Study on Height, Waist Circumference, and Interscapular Distance

In recent years, the connection between physical fitness methods like Pilates and body measurements has gained significant attention. This study focuses on the effectiveness of the Pilates Stance, particularly the 'drawing in and up' position of the abdomen, compared to the traditional stance (feet parallel together or apart) often employed in clinical settings. By examining the effects of Pilates Matwork and Pilates Stance on key anthropometric measurements, such as height, waist circumference, and interscapular distance (ISD), this research sheds light on the benefits of Pilates and its potential role in promoting health and better posture.

Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) placed a strong emphasis on posture in his writings. He recommended people continually correct their stance by "pulling in the abdomen and holding it as long as they could". The Pilates Stance is all about proper body alignment and core engagement, when standing still keep equal weight on both feet, heels together, toes apart, neither allowing the knees to sag nor pressing them backward, but always pulling the abdomen in.


This stance improves not just posture but also body awareness. Unlike the generic stance often seen in healthcare, the Pilates stance encourages individuals to pay close attention to how they hold and move their bodies.


In a study with 48 healthy women, averaging 60 years old, participants took part in a 10-week Pilates Matwork training. This research aimed to see if Pilates Matwork would enhance physical fitness and lead to meaningful changes in body measurements. The results could offer insights into how Pilates might influence our everyday life.

Methodology of the Study


The study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches to gather data before and after the Pilates Matwork training. One Pilates expert and one novice took independent measurements of participants’ weight, height, waist circumference, and interscapular distance (ISD) before and after the 10-week Pilates Matwork training.


This two-tiered measurement system allowed for an evaluation of how experience influences the accuracy and reliability of the results. Utilizing repeated measures ANOVA ensured a solid statistical basis for the findings. Such rigor in methodology is essential to ensure the data's credibility when measuring body metrics.

Key Findings on Height, Waist Circumference, and Interscapular Distance


The study's results were striking, revealing significant effects of the Pilates stance on various measurements. Compared to the traditional stance, those who practiced the Pilates Stance showed:


  1. An increase in height by an average of 1.06 in.

  2. A decrease in waist circumference by approximately 2.04 in.


Additionally, ISD decreased by up to 14 mm (0.55 in), with the most significant reductions seen in participants who completed the Pilates training.


These changes suggest that engaging the trunk muscles while practicing Pilates may enhance posture, which in turn positively affects key body measurements.
